The first competitions of the National Research Foundation (NRF) of Ukraїna (Ukraine)

In May the first NRF competitions were announced. Organization of all the necessary administrative structures for the foundation operation took about 4.5 years. General information about the competitions is provided below in the form of quotations from the announcements and conditions of the competitions.

Competition "Science for security of Human and Society"

“The purpose of the competition is to finance the best scientific projects aimed at solving current security problems of human and society in Ukraine.

The subject of the competition: a competition for collective projects in the areas of research related to biosafety, biomedicine, ecology, cyber and informational security, in response to economic, social, humanitarian challenges in natural and man-made emergencies, as well as overcoming medical and biological, economic, social, psychological, humanitarian and cultural consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.”[1]

“Types of projects by deadlines:

1) 2020 projects.

2) 2020-2021 projects.

The total amount of funding for the competition in 2020 is UAH 100 million.

Maximum total funding for one project :

- with deadline in 2020 - UAH 5 million;

- with deadline in 2020-2021 - UAH 10 million.”[1]

"Participants of the competition can be legal entities of any form of ownership." [1]

“The supervisor and at least one project executor must have a science degree obtained or recognized in Ukraine, scientific publications in periodicals indexed by Scopus and/or WoS, and/or scientific monographs (for social sciences and humanities) in the relevant field of knowledge.” [1]

"Project executors a not allowed to have primary employment in a foreign entity." [1]

“Date and time of the beginning of submission of applications: 15.05.2020, 00:01 Kyiv time.

Date and time of completion of submission of applications: 15.06.2020, 23:59 Kyiv time.

Conducting scientific and scientific-technical examination and summarizing the results of the competition: until 07.08.2020. ” [1]

"Documents are submitted in electronic form by filling out the application form for participation in the competition on the official website of the Foundation (https://nrfu.org.ua)." [2]

Competition "Support for research of leading and young scientists"

“The purpose of the competition is to provide financial support to leading scientists of Ukraїna, who together with talented young scientists carry out research and development aimed at obtaining new fundamental and applied knowledge, to help solve current problems of state, human and society development and to integrate Ukraїnian science into the world science space.

The subject of the competition: competition of collective projects of any field for the execution of basic and applied research and development.” [3, 4]

“Types of projects by deadline:

1) 2020-2021 projects.

2) 2020-2022 projects.

The total amount of funding for the competition in 2020 is UAH 150 million.

The maximum annual amount of project financing is UAH 5 million.

The maximum amount of project financing with deadline in 2020-2021 is UAH 10 million, with deadline in 2020-2022 - UAH 15 million.” [3]

“Participants in the competition can be legal entities of any form of ownership. Grant applications can be submitted by project teams of 2 to 7 researchers, who may be employees of one or more institutions (organizations, enterprises), the number of young scientists (under the age of 35 - editor's note) cannot be less than 50 percent of the participants." [3]

“The scientific supervisor of a project in mathematical, natural, technical, biological, agricultural and medical sciences can be only a scientist who has a scientific degree and is the author (or co-author) of at least 5 publications for the period 2015-2020 or at least 10 publications for the period 2010–2020 in periodicals classified as the first (Q1) and second (Q2) quartiles according to the Journal Citation Reports or Scimago classification.” [3]

“The scientific supervisor of a project in the humanities, social, economic, legal sciences can only be a scientist who simultaneously meets the following criteria:

- has a scientific degree;

- has scientific publications in professional periodicals indexed in Scopus and WoS, or is the author of a scientific monograph (co-author of a collective monograph), published (or prepared for publication and announced by the publisher) in a foreign language outside Ukraine, except CIS countries; such monographs also include translations from the Ukraїnian language;

- is the author (or one of the co-authors, not more than 3 co-authors) of a scientific monograph published during the last 5 years in Ukraїna, which (or) won an award (prize) of national or international competitions, (or) received at least three positive reviews published in professional scientific periodicals.” [3]
